Founded by Fred Sheard, this practice has a rich history that we’re excited to share with you in this blog. Let\u2019s take a stroll down memory lane and explore the journey of SMH Sheards, from its humble beginnings to the thriving business it is today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Early 1900s: The Beginning of an Era<\/b><\/h3>\n

It all began in 1903 when Fred Sheard, a certified accountant, decided to go his own way after gaining experience at the Huddersfield accountancy firm, Poppleton, Appleby and Ward. He set up his own business, Fred Sheard and Sons, in the Kirkgate Buildings. Little did he know that this small venture would lay the foundation for a legacy that has lasted nearly 125 years!<\/span><\/p>\n

Fred Sheard\u2019s vision was cut short when he passed away in 1931 at the age of 58. However, his entrepreneurial spirit lived on through his two sons, Ernest and Percy, who took the reins and kept the business moving forward. The firm continued to evolve over the decades, with new generations stepping in to carry the torch. Ernest\u2019s son, Frederick, and Michael Dyson joined the firm in the 1950s, followed by Percy\u2019s son, Richard, in 1970. The firm also welcomed Brian Butterworth as a partner from 1971 until 1996, further solidifying its presence in the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1984, Fred Sheard and Sons expanded by acquiring the business of J R Davison and Son, marking another milestone in its journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Turn of the Century: A New Chapter<\/b><\/h3>\n

As the business rolled into the 2000s, the firm saw a significant shift. After decades of being a family-owned business, in 2002, the leadership was passed to Kevin Winterburn and Carolyn Atkinson, two dedicated professionals who had progressed within the firm. Carolyn, who had joined the firm in 1985 and became the firm’s first female partner in 1993, brought a fresh perspective to the business. Kevin, who started as an apprentice in 1989, became a partner in 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under their guidance, the firm continued to flourish. Supported by a strong team of 15 staff members, Kevin and Carolyn ensured that the values and traditions of the firm were upheld.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today and Beyond: A New Identity<\/b><\/h3>\n

As we move forward into 2024, Sheards is embarking on an exciting new chapter. Following a merger with the <\/span>SMH Group<\/span><\/a>, a well-established practice with branches across Yorkshire and Derbyshire, the firm will now be known as <\/span>SMH Sheards<\/span><\/a>. This merger brings together years of expertise and opens up new opportunities for growth and service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with this new identity, the heart of the firm remains the same. Today, SMH Sheards holds the distinction of being the only chartered accountancy firm in Huddersfield that still maintains a direct family link to its founder, Fred Sheard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
