{"id":26831,"date":"2024-07-11T16:38:24","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T15:38:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smh.group\/?p=26831"},"modified":"2024-09-25T12:58:30","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T11:58:30","slug":"interest-rate-cut-on-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/interest-rate-cut-on-the-way\/","title":{"rendered":"Interest rate cut on the way?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The European Central Bank is leading the charge as central banks worldwide begin to reduce interest rates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On June 6, 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/home\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Central Bank<\/a> (ECB) became the first of the major central banks (the big three being the US, UK, and Europe) to announce an interest rate cut in the current cycle. This marked the ECB\u2019s first reduction since September 2019, when its main rate was lowered to -0.5%. ECB President Christine Lagarde had hinted at a June cut for some time, so the move was anticipated. However, she has been more cautious about future rate reductions, indicating that June\u2019s cut may not signal the beginning of a series of regular cuts at each meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks after Lagarde\u2019s cut, her counterpart at the US Federal Reserve (the Fed), Jerome Powell, also produced an unsurprising interest rate announcement: no change. At the same time, the Fed\u2019s rate-setting committee released its quarterly projection of interest rate falls for the next two years \u2013 using forecasts from its members. The detail is summarised in what the investment community calls the \u2018dot plot\u2019 and suggests only one cut of 0.25% by December 2024, followed by another four in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Eight days later, the Bank of England, led by Andrew Bailey, repeated Powell\u2019s no-change mantra. While the Bank denies its decisions are influenced by politics, like the Fed, it was understandably wary of making interest rate changes close to an election. The Bank also faces a problem that the Fed and ECB do not: average earnings growth of around 6%. In the view of most economists, and the Bank, a 6% rise in earnings is incompatible with 2% inflation \u2013 the Bank\u2019s target. Even so, after the Bank\u2019s decision in June, the money markets were pricing in a near-even chance of a cut at the beginning of August.<\/p>\n<p>If you have been accumulating cash on deposits earning an interest rate usefully above inflation, now may be the time to consider investing that capital.
