{"id":20112,"date":"2020-05-15T11:37:30","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T11:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smh.group\/?p=20112"},"modified":"2023-02-15T13:49:37","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T13:49:37","slug":"redefining-income-dividend-requirements-suspended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/redefining-income-dividend-requirements-suspended\/","title":{"rendered":"Redefining income \u2013 dividend requirements suspended"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>In a rare move, the rules for what constitutes an income fund have been changed.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What counts as an income fund?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Investment Association (IA), the trade body for investment fund managers, sets detailed criteria for no less than 39 different investment sectors, ranging from Japanese Smaller Companies to Volatility Managed. The IA also monitors the funds in each sector to ensure they do not stray from the relevant criteria. The Association\u2019s goal is to enable investors and their advisers to compare like with like, which to some extent explains the proliferation of sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes to sector definitions are rare and usually occur after much consultation because of the disruption which they can cause. However, in April the IA announced a near instant revision to two popular sectors: UK Equity Income and Global Equity Income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, prior to the IA\u2019s announcement both these funds had definitions which required them to produce a minimum level of dividend income. Broadly speaking these were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>90% of the last year\u2019s dividend yield for the relevant index (FTSE All-Share Index for UK Equity Income and MSCI World Index for Global Equity Income); <em>and<\/em><\/li><li>100% of the average yield for the relevant index on a rolling three-year basis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both these requirements have now been suspended, the first for twelve months and the second pending review \u201cas the markets settle and the outlook clears\u201d. The reason for the IA\u2019s rapid suspension is the market\u2019s reaction (and in some cases regulators\u2019 reactions) to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many companies have decided \u2013 or, for example, in the case of major UK banks, been told \u2013 to stop dividend payments.
