{"id":19893,"date":"2020-01-14T12:29:22","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T12:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smh.group\/?p=19893"},"modified":"2023-02-15T13:39:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T13:39:15","slug":"venture-capital-trusts-continue-to-attract-investors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/venture-capital-trusts-continue-to-attract-investors\/","title":{"rendered":"Venture capital trusts continue to attract investors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The latest statistics from HMRC show the inflows to venture capital trusts (VCTs) have more than doubled since 2009\/10. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of last year, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/850880\/VCT_National_Statistics_2019_Commentary.pdf\">HMRC<\/a><\/span><\/strong> published details of how much money was raised by <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/financial-services\/investment-options\/tax-reducing-investments\/\">VCTs<\/a><\/span><\/strong> in 2018\/19. At \u00a3716m, the figure was the highest since 2005\/06, when a temporarily higher rate of tax relief was on offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increased popularity of VCTs in recent years is at least partly due\nto the restrictions on pensions, such as the tapered annual allowance rules.\nThe tightened pension limits have made pension contributions tax <em>in<\/em>-efficient\nfor some high (and not so high) earners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, VCTs offer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A 30% tax credit\non investments of up to \u00a3200,000 per tax year. This is clawed back if the VCT\nshares are sold within five years;<\/li><li>All dividends\nare free of personal tax, provided the original investment was made within the\n\u00a3200,000 per tax year limit; and<\/li><li>No capital\ngains tax on any gains (but no relief for losses, either). <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While VCTs are being used as a pension alternative to obtain tax relief,\nin investment terms VCTs are very different. Your choice of pension investments\nis almost limitless and can be as high risk or secure as you wish. In contrast,\na narrow investment choice and high risk are both inbuilt to VCTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 80% of the investments underlying VCTs must be in relatively\nyoung, small companies that are not listed (other than on the AIM market). Over\nthe years, successive Chancellors have ratcheted up the risk element by\nexcluding a wide variety of businesses, from market gardens to wind farms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest change to VCT investment rules took effect in April 2018 and\nintroduced a specific \u2018risk to capital\u2019 requirement to prevent \u2018safe\u2019\ninvestments being made. That high risk focus makes it all the more important to\ntake advice when investing in VCTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Budget now in March, the year end season for VCT capital raising is well underway.
