{"id":19819,"date":"2019-11-20T12:03:51","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T12:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smh.group\/?p=19819"},"modified":"2023-02-15T13:45:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T13:45:08","slug":"uk-dividend-growth-continues-but-for-how-long","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/uk-dividend-growth-continues-but-for-how-long\/","title":{"rendered":"UK dividend growth continues, but for how long?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Recent data show that dividends from UK shares rose by nearly 7% year-on-year in the third quarter. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest Dividend Monitor from <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkassetservices.com\/our-thinking\/uk-dividend-monitor-q3-2019\">Link Asset Services<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, the share registrars, shows that dividends from UK shares continued to grow faster than inflation in the third quarter of 2019, despite all the political turmoil the UK experienced over those three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared with the\nsame quarter in 2018, total UK dividend payments rose by 6.9% to a new third\nquarter record of \u00a335.5bn. Link attributed the increase to a variety of\nfactors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A near 300% increase in special (one-off) dividend\npayments. These included a \u00a31.1bn special dividend payment from the Royal Bank\nof Scotland to its major shareholder, the UK government. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A 29% increase in payments from companies in the\nmining sector, which is now second only to the banking sector in terms of the\nvalue of dividends paid. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Foreign exchange gains on dividends declared in US\ndollars and euros added 2.6% to the overall dividend growth figure, the flip\nside of adverse impact of political uncertainty on the pound. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As the graph\nshows, Link estimates that total dividend payments in 2019 will exceed \u00a3100bn\nfor the first time, rising 10.4% above last year\u2019s outturn. The importance of\nspecial dividends to achieving that growth is highlighted in the different\nheights of the red columns in 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of those driving\nfactors for 2019 dividend growth \u2013 exchange rate movements and one-off payments\n\u2013 could reverse direction in the coming year. Link suggests that if these two\nelements were removed from the calculations, the trend for dividend growth\nwould be \u2018flat or low single-digit increases\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the upward trajectory is not\nexpected to last. Link expects shares to yield 4.4% over the next 12 months,\nexcluding any special dividends. But as it notes, \u2018By comparison, the yield on\nUK government bonds dropped to just 0.49% in Q3, while residential property and\nsavings rates were flat.
