{"id":19648,"date":"2019-09-19T11:15:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T11:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smh.group\/?p=19648"},"modified":"2023-02-15T13:45:10","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T13:45:10","slug":"a-bumpy-ride-for-august-on-the-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/devstagesite.co.uk\/smhgroup\/a-bumpy-ride-for-august-on-the-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"A bumpy ride for August on the markets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Stock markets, as well as some family holidaymakers, experienced a rollercoaster August.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The traditional holiday month proved to be\nanything but quiet on the world\u2019s investment markets. As the graph of the major\nUK and US stock market indices shows, there were plenty of sharp lurches, up as\nwell as down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inevitably the downward trends attracted\nmore attention, particularly the fall in US share values on 13 August. \u201cDow\ndrops 800 points\u201d is a headline that newspaper editors find hard to resist.\n\u2018Dow falls just over 3%\u2019 would have been equally accurate, but 800 points\nsounds considerably more dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several factors challenged the markets in\nAugust:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Short-term interest rates look\nset to fall further in the US (where the first cut in ten years took effect at\nthe start of the month). Elsewhere there is less scope to cut as rates are so\nlow, but central banks are hinting at other measures, such as a return of\nquantitative easing. <\/li><li>Long-term interest rates also\ncontinued to fall, often deeper into negative territory. In the second half of\nthe month the German government sold a 30-year bond which paid no interest and\nguaranteed investors aloss\nof 0.11% a year, if they held the paper until 2049.Tumbling and negative yields are seen\nby some commentators as an indicator that a recession is looming.<\/li><li>The trade war between the US\nand China reignited, with a new round of tariff-by-tweeting from President\nTrump. In response, the Chinese allowed their currency, the Renminbi, to\nweaken, with knock-on effects for its neighbours. <\/li><li>The Brexit saga ratcheted up in\nthe UK and Europe, as the new Prime Minister Boris Johnson adopted his \u2018do or\ndie\u2019 stance to 31 October and announced a provocative prorogation of Parliament\nahead of the deadline.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any rollercoaster ride, the experience can be both exhilarating and nauseating.
